Washington State Man Charged with Theft in a Workers’ Compensation Claim

Huntington Beach, Calif., – (November 12, 2009) – Llorente SIU, in partnership with Alaska National Insurance Company, announces charges filed for a Washington State man for alleged theft involving a workers’ compensation claim.   Edward Bailey of Kent, Washington, was charged November 10, 2009, as a result of the investigation conducted by Criminal Investigator Bennie Hamilton with the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner.  Bailey was charged with one count of Theft in the First Degree and 27 counts of Theft in the Second Degree.  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Melanie Tratnik.

In June 2006, Bailey alleged injury to his back and right leg when he lifted gallons of paint and stacked them on a shelf. Subsequently, Bailey was filmed working on what was later found to be his sailboat, performing activities that were inconsistent with his presentation during a filmed interview.

An investigation by Alaska National Insurance Company in partnership with Llorente SIU found that Bailey had made material misrepresentations in order to secure benefits to which he was not entitled. The alleged theft cost Alaska National Insurance Company over $47,000.

“We applaud the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner and Criminal Investigator Bennie Hamilton for aggressively pursuing an arrest in this case,” said Kristen Llorente, President and Chief Executive Officer of Llorente SIU. “We are proud to have partnered with Alaska National Insurance Company in defending yet another false insurance claim. “
